Due to its laborious nature, it's hard to believe that as recently as 50 years ago, letterpress was the printing norm and not the exception. No wonder it was cast aside by the advance of offset lithography and desktop publishing. But what we've gained in convenience, we've lost in character. While contemporary printing methods provide wonderfully consistent results, they are impersonal. Fortunately, letterpress remains a viable option for those who prefer the trace of a human to the touch of a machine. Henceforth Press owns and operates two presses: a Vandercook SP20 flatbed cylinder press and a still-treadle-operated Challenge Gordon platen jobber. We have a wide and growing collection of wood and metal type, as well as various printer's blocks. We also make use of photopolymer plates for original illustrations and digital composition. All electronic production and prepress work is done on our Macintosh, using Quark XPress, Photoshop and Illustrator. We are happy to accept completed files--just contact us for specs and tips. |
